Is There Hope for Mexico After Copa America 2024 Upset Loss to Venezuela?

Mexico’s defeat against Venezuela in Copa America 2024 stunned fans. Despite dominating with 17 shots, El Tri fell 1-0, thanks to Salomon Rondón’s 57th-minute penalty kick. Orbelín Pineda’s weak penalty attempt in the 87th minute was saved by Venezuelan keeper Rafael Romo, sealing Mexico’s fate.

This loss adds to Mexico’s recent struggles, including a seven-match winless streak against the United States. However, there might be a silver lining as Mexico faces a crucial match against Ecuador on Sunday. Former USMNT player Jimmy Conrad shared his optimism on FOX Soccer Now with Melissa Ortiz and Chris “The Bear” Fallica.

“Mexico knows what they need to do,” Conrad said. “A draw favors Ecuador due to their better goal difference. Mexico has to win. Playing with that purpose is essential.”

Ortiz pointed out that Mexico’s urgency has been lacking. “They need to be clinical. Mexico hasn’t shown that consistently. They waited until the last 15 minutes to activate against Jamaica, but that can’t be the strategy.”

Fallica criticized the team’s quality, noting, “Mexico lacks the talent of past teams. They entered the tournament ranked 15th by FIFA and were favored to secure a top-two finish in Group B. Yet, they now face a tough path to the quarterfinals.”

Fallica also shared his skepticism before the tournament. “I couldn’t believe Mexico was almost co-favorite to win this group. Their buildup and roster turnover were concerning. I bet on Mexico at +330 to fail to qualify for the knockout stage. Ecuador is favored on Sunday.”

Conrad echoed the sentiment, highlighting Mexico’s inefficiency. “Jaime Lozano’s team outshot Venezuela and had more possession, but they couldn’t convert. It’s frustrating for Lozano, who did enough to deserve a result.”

Despite the setback, Mexico has a chance to regroup. Their must-win match against Ecuador will be played at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, a familiar venue for El Tri fans. The game kicks off Sunday at 8 ET on FOX and the FOX Sports App. Mexico’s Copa America 2024 journey hinges on this pivotal match.
