England’s performance at Euro 2024 has been anything but impressive. The Three Lions won Group C, but their lackluster play and fan frustration with manager Gareth Southgate have been dominant storylines. Yet, England is now favored to win the tournament. Why? It’s all about the draw.
The tournament draw has created a lopsided bracket. Spain, Germany, and Portugal, the only teams to win their first two matches, are in the same half.
France and Belgium, not winning their groups, also ended up in that half. England, on the other hand, finds itself on the opposite side with a struggling Italy.
However, England’s path isn’t exactly easy. They managed just 28 shots in three group matches, ranking 20th out of 24 teams. Fans might see a favorable draw, but other nations view England as beatable.
The English could face Italy in the quarterfinals, a rematch of the 2021 final. Austria, after topping Group D ahead of France and the Netherlands, also stands in their way.
BetMGM lists England at +350 to win the tournament, the same odds as before the event started. Spain follows at +400, with France and host Germany at +500, and Portugal at +750. These five teams were pre-tournament favorites and remain so after the group stage.
